I finally understand that in order to really understand music theory, learning composition is the only way, because its really the only reason anyone would need to understand it, especially on a larger scale. I don't mean naming chords, but that's a small part of it. To compose properly, one has to have a broad view of the beginning, middle and end of a piece and how it is all going to relate to itself, and that could only come by either being a ridiculous genius like Bach, or by painstaking work to understand the function of various situations that only music creates.

Music alters time.
Visual art alters space.
music videos do both. sadly.
